India has ranked in the bottom five in every edition since 2018, including dead last in 2022 and 176th of 177 in 2026, with only one country below it. Air quality is the single biggest drag: India is home to most of the world’s most polluted cities, and Delhi is repeatedly ranked the most polluted capital. India disputes the index’s methodology, particularly its climate projections, but the environmental health burden (air, water, sanitation) is corroborated by WHO and Lancet data. Neighbour ranks shown are from the 2024 edition, when India ranked ahead of only Myanmar, Laos, Pakistan and Vietnam."

But the relative rank has barely moved: India stays around 140th of roughly 190 countries, below Bangladesh, Bhutan and every BRICS peer. This is the central Viksit Bharat gap: fifth or sixth in total size, bottom quartile per person. Reaching high-income status by 2047 requires sustaining ~8% growth for two decades."

V-Dem records this as India’s lowest level of academic freedom since 1900, below even the 1975–77 Emergency, with declines across all five parameters since roughly 2013. India ranks below Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan, and below conflict-affected states including Iraq, Sudan, Syria and Yemen; the report links the decline to the electoral success of anti-pluralist parties. Neighbour scores other than the top few are approximate, as V-Dem publishes bands rather than a full country-by-country rank table."
